RANCHI, MARCH 16. The Jharkhand unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today merged with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, in a clear defiance of the whip issued twice by the party high command to its lone MLA, Kamlesh Kumar Singh, to support the United Progressive Alliance-led Opposition in the State. The State president of the BJP, Raghubar Das, announced the merger here. Although the NCP high command had already dissolved the State unit after issuing whip to its MLA on two occasions to support the UPA, the latter's merger with the BJP was to ensure the legitimacy of Mr. Singh's induction into the Munda Government. The ousted State president, Dhruv Bhagat, said the decision on the merger was taken by the Jharkhand unit's executive committee on March 11 much ahead of the dissolution by the high command. Therefore the merger was quite valid.
