TAMBARAM, MARCH 16. Around 500 residents of Sadurangapattinam and Meyyur villages today resorted to a hunger strike alleging that the State Government was distributing relief only to fishermen and their families and not to other sections of society that was also affected by the tsunami last December. The residents said 14 non-fisherpersons died in the tsunami. Several others lost their homes and livelihood. Most of them were daily wage earners but they were ignored by government agencies during relief distribution. The protestors said they had staged a protest in January as well. Senior officials from the Kancheepuram district administration had assured them then that their grievances would be looked into. Around 300 women took part in the demonstration that was held near Sengani Amman Koil in Meyyur village. More than 50 shops in the area closed their shutters in support of the protest. K. Shanmugham, former president of Meyyur village panchayat, led the protest. Thirukachur K. Arumugham, Chengalpattu MLA, said the State Government should distribute relief to everyone.
