CHENNAI, MARCH 16. Private mobile phone service subscribers in the city today had difficulty accessing the BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) network, especially landlines. Sources in the telecom industry, including senior executives of a private service provider, blamed the problem on BSNL executives, who launched a work-to-rule protest in support of their demands on Tuesday. Aircel sources said its subscribers complained of difficulty in getting through to BSNL landlines. The points of interconnect (PoIs) at the Chennai Telephones exchanges on Anna Salai, Flower Bazaar and K.K. Nagar were not maintained properly. Chennai Telephones sources confirmed there were problems in the PoIs, which serve as a crucial node for routing the calls from private operators to the BSNL network. The system was disturbed and choked intermittently during the day, which resulted in difficulties for private mobile service subscribers. The complaints came from the subscribers of Reliance, Aircel and Airtel, an official of Chennai Telephones said. He pointed out that even calls from BSNL landlines to mobiles were affected around 5 p.m. "This was unexpected and not warranted, as the unions have assured that they would not disturb the network ... and cause inconvenience," the official added. Speaking to The Hindu , the press secretary of the United Forum for BSNL Executives in Chennai, R. Chakrapani, said the protest by executive level officers could affect the network's software, as these officers are responsible for finding and removing glitches in the software. He denied any deliberate disruption of the lines caused by the striking officers.
