`Mahasamprokshanam' performed at Tiruvellarai temple

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, MARCH 16. Hundreds of devotees from Tiruchi and adjoining districts witnessed the `mahasamprokshanam' of Sri Pundarikaksha Perumal Temple at Tiruvellarai near here on Wednesday.

Religious fervour pervaded the area shortly after the `oadal,' a musical instrument, was played, marking the beginning of the `samprokshanam' rituals. Holy water from the `gadam' was sprinkled on the `vimana' of the presiding deity. The `samprokshanam' was simultaneously performed to the `vimana' of the `sannadhi' of Sri Pankajanayaki, Sri Nazhikettan, Sri Aryabhattal and Sri Chakarathazhwar and Chinna Kudavarai `gopuram.'

Verses from `Kappeedal Pasuram' sung by Periyazhwar and `Periya Tirumozhi' sung by Tirumangai Azhwar were recited while the `samprokshanam' was being performed.

Special pujas were performed for four `kaalas' at the `yagasalai,' which began last Monday. More than 20 Vedic pandits, led by Santhana Bhattar, performed the pujas.

Sri Ranga Narayana Jeer of Srirangam, the Collector, V. Pandian, the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, M. Paranjothi, and the Joint Commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Departement, B. Sivakumar, were present.

The temple, associated with the `varaha avathar' of Lord Vishnu, is said to have been constructed by Sibi Chakravarthy. The `samprokshanam' was last performed in 1983.
