HYDERABAD, MARCH 16. The city alone accounts for nearly 2,200 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated everyday, M. Siva Reddy, Senior Environmental Engineer, Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), has said. Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said only 1,500 tonnes of the nearly 11,000 tonnes of MSW generated each day in the State gets handled in a safe and scientific manner with the rest ending up in the dumps. He said while dumping at Autonagar was stopped, the PCB was yet to decide on whether to reclaim or cap the site. Though the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) started putting the municipal solid waste at Jawaharnagar, the dumping at Jawaharnagar had no clearance from the PCB, Mr. Reddy clarified.
New proposals
Presently five companies were involved in the waste to energy projects including Selco at Shadnagar, near the city, while 20 new proposals were submitted to the Government. "However, we are asking the companies interested in the concept to come with an integrated facility that includes a provision for landfill," he said. The PCB asked the 111 municipalities and nine corporations to improve conditions at dumping yards and a proposal on municipalities paying a tipping fee of Rs. 200 per tonne to the landfill operators was being considered. The PCB's Joint Chief Environmental Engineer, S. Surya Prasad, and the Social Scientist, K. Venkateswara Rao, was present.
