Congress meet throws traffic out of gear

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 16. The public meeting organised by the Congress at Secunderabad on Wednesday threw traffic out of gear at several junctions causing inconvenience to people.

Vehicles carrying people to the meeting venue at Parade grounds trickled till noon. However, influx of hundreds of lorries, buses, vans and cars towards evening resulted in traffic snarls at several intersections, especially at Rajendranagar, Kukatpally, Uppal and Bowenpally.

Haphazard parking

Employees returning home from office were the worst sufferers. With a majority of RTC bus services towards Secunderabad terminated, passengers were seen stranded at bus stops.

Though parking lots were earmarked, haphazard parking of vehicles on the road and ignorance of the drivers about the routes brought traffic to a standstill. Employees of industrial units located on the fringes of the city had a tough time reaching their destinations.

"Number of bus services has suddenly gone down and the jam has only aggravated the situation. It has taken nearly three hours to reach from Bowenpally to Medchal in the bus," Padma, a pharmaceutical company worker, said. Local MLAs and politicians took out processions, accompanied by huge convoys leading to congestion on arterial roads, including Tank Bund, in the afternoon. Allowing vehicles up to a few hundred yards from the venue worsened the situation. Though the meeting was over by 6 p.m., dispersal of the nearly two lakh people led to traffic snarls on all routes connected to the Parade grounds. It took nearly two hours for the police to clear the congestion.
