Delhi HC asks IOA to file Singh Deo report

NEW DELHI, MARCH 17. The Delhi High Court has asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to file the K.P. Singh Deo Committee report regarding the doping controversy involving two Indian weightlifters at the Athens Olympic Games.

The petition filed by Pratima Kumari, one of the suspended weightlifters, came up before Justice Gita Mittal on Thursday. It was originally scheduled to be listed on January 25, but got postponed.

The court also asked the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to furnish the address of coach Leonid Taranenko of Belarus, who was part of the Indian contingent at the Athens Games.

Pratima Kumari, along with two other lifters, Sanamacha Chanu and Sunaina, was banned for life by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) following her doping-related expulsion from Athens. The IOA went by the Singh Deo Committee report while arriving at the decision to life-ban the lifters and coach Pal Singh Sandhu. The Union Government had also banned Sandhu and Taranenko.

Pratima's counsel, Sushil Salwan, has argued that the IOA had no jurisdiction to impose a life-ban on his client as well as the other lifters.

The case, which is yet to be admitted, has now been posted for May 20.

Meanwhile, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has intimated Pratima that her appeal could be taken up at Busan, Korea, between May 10 and 15. Pratima had contested her suspension by the international federation through Mr. Salwan. — Our Special Correspondent
