CUDDAPAH, MARCH 17. Dalit Christians leaders staged a dharna before the Collectorate on Thursday demanding that the community be recognised as Scheduled Castes. Addressing the protesters, the TDP district vice-president, V.S. Ameer Babu, said Dalit Christians would prosper if granted SC status as they were socially, economically, educationally and politically backward. Denying SC status to those who are Dalits by birth, for embracing Christianity, was unjust, he asserted. Dalits embracing Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism had SC reservation, the SC United Front district general secretary, A. Baladasu, said. The CPI (M) leader, C. Babu, wondered why Dalit Christians were considered BCs. The Janata Party president, V. Deva Kumar, and Dalita Aikya Vedika leader, Y. Ramesh, took part.
