VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 17. The district Collector, K. Prabhakara Reddy, has stressed the importance of providing information on various types of drugs to customers to empower them in their fight for consumer rights. Addressing medical shop owners and pharmacists at the launch of an electronic manual to educate consumers here on Thursday, the Collector said unlike other consumers, persons purchasing medicines had no choice. They should therefore be more informed about the products and their quality, he said. He lauded the efforts of the Drug Control Administration (DCA) in educating consumers. He released a poster on the precautions the consumers should take while purchasing drugs. He urged medical shop owners to display the poster prominently in their shops.
e-Governance
The DCA Assistant Director, P. Nagabhushanam, said there were 8,000 medical shops, 27 blood banks and 50 drug manufacturing units in the district. Drug inspectors conducted 5,473 surprise checks and suspended the licences of 610 shops and cancelled the licences of 20 shops. As many as 312 cases booked by the DCA were pending in court and there were convictions in 12 cases in 2004. The DCA inspectors made 72 surprise checks on the 50 manufacturing units in the divisions. The Drug Inspector, K. Raja Bhanu, gave a presentation on `Empowerment of Consumers through e-Governance'.
