Breach of privilege notice against Dinamalar

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 17. The deputy leader of the Opposition in Kerala, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, today served a notice in the State legislature to raise a breach of privilege motion against the Tamil daily Dinamalar for carrying a report allegedly intended to tarnish the image of the leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan.

In his notice, Mr. Balakrishnan said the Dinamalar had carried a report in its issue dated March 14 stating that Mr. Achuthanandan had, on March 15 last year, urged the State Government not to give even a drop of water from Kerala's Neyyar Dam to the Vilavukode taluk of Nagercoil district in Tamil Nadu.

"This news item is untrue and intended to diminish the high esteem of the honourable leader of the Opposition, who is also a Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M).

In fact, there was no sitting of the Kerala Assembly on March 14, 2004, and hence the news item is untrue and baseless.

Even though Mr. Achuthanandan is interested in protecting the water resources of Kerala, he is equally keen to see that such issues may not in any way disturb the friendly relations with the people of the two neighbouring States," Mr. Kodiyeri said.

The notice is against the editor, printer and publisher of Dinamalar, Venkitapathy.
