Kochi
By Our Staff Reporter
KOCHI, MARCH 17. The only thing that is active round-the-clock in the State is waste production and it is time people moved on to mode of production, said K. Narayana Kurup, former acting-chief justice, Chennai High Court. He was speaking after the inauguration of the programme, `an action plan for waste-free Kerala', launched by the Kerala Congress (Joseph) at the Town Hall here today. "Waste management is the prime duty of every citizen. Delay in processing the waste has become a major health issue, not just in the city, but also across the State," Mr. Kurup said. In his presidential address, P.J. Joseph, chairman of Kerala Congress (Joseph) and former minister, said that we should re-examine the concept of waste disposal. Most of the material thrown out as waste could be converted to manure and thus was valuable for an agrarian society like ours. Even though, Kochi has many natural mechanisms to flush out the waste through a network of canals, this system has now become defunct. P.C. Cyriac, former chairman of Rubber Board; M.K. Prasad, environmentalist and former pro-vice chancellor, Calicut University; V.N. Sivasankara Pillai, director, School of Rural Development and Appropriate Technology, Cochin University of Science and Technology; Joseph Alexander, former Chief Town Planner; P.K. Mohammed Rasheed, State president, IMA, and T.V. Jacob, former chief engineer, participated in the panel discussion that followed.
