Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the photograph of the body of a person hanged to death from a crane in Iran (March 17). This is the right way of punishing a person who committed 21 murders. Though it may appear cruel, such punishments act as deterrents. They are sure to bring down the crime rate. The punishment should be commensurate with the degree of the crime committed.
Annu Mathew,
* * * Sir, The sight of the murderer hanged from a crane is gruesome. Though there can be no second opinion that he deserves capital punishment for the heinous crime he committed, the manner in which the execution was conducted deserves condemnation. More spine-chilling is the news that the killer was tortured before the punishment was carried out. It is surprising that people were allowed to flog and even stab the condemned.
Tharcius S. Fernando,
* * * Sir, The photograph brings back memories of the debate that surrounded Dhananjoy Chatterjee's execution in August 2004. The gruesome manner in which Mohammed Bijeh was treated before being hanged should make people think about capital punishment again. Is taking the life of a person in such a manner not murder too?
Sudhamshu Hebbar,
