CHENNAI, MARCH 18 . Examination of witnesses in the `disproportionate wealth case' against the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, is likely to begin in the Bangalore special court only next month. After the first hearing on Monday last, the judge, A.S. Pachhapure, adjourned the case to March 28. By then translation of some documents required by the prosecution and defence is expected to be completed. The judge said the work might require only a week. Once the copies of the documents are given to the prosecution, the list of witnesses to be summoned will be furnished to the court. Summonses will be issued to the witnesses for deposition. During the last hearing, the Special Public Prosecutor told the court that he required the complete set of documents so that he could go through them and decide who should be summoned for cross-examination. According to the petition filed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) general secretary, K. Anbazhagan, in the Supreme Court seeking transfer of the case from Tamil Nadu, out of the 76 prosecution witnesses who were recalled, 64 had gone back on their statements. The number of witnesses to be summoned before the Bangalore court will be known only after the SPP receives the translated copies. Defence counsel told the court that they were from Chennai and had to attend courts there also. Once the list of witnesses is submitted, they will have to be given sufficient notice for their presence in the Bangalore court. When the court wanted to know whether marked objects, now in Chennai, were required, defence said they were not necessary now.
