Rs. 6 crore for beautification of Thekkinkadu maidan

THRISSUR, MARCH 18. The Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) president, M. A. Krishnanunny, has said that steps will be taken soon for the beautification of the Thekkinkadu Maidan which is located in the centre of the city.

Replying to questions at a news conference here today, Mr. Krishnanunny said the Tourism Department has sanctioned Rs. 6 crores for the beautification of the Thekkinkadu Maidan which is under the custody of the CDB.

The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, who is also the MLA of Thrissur has convened a meeting at his Chamber on March 22 to discuss the details of the beautification projects.

The Devaswom Minister, K. C. Venugopal, is also likely to attend the meeting, Mr. Krishnanunny said. The projects include erecting proper fencing around the maidan, development of good garden and installation of decorative lights. Proper security will be provided at the Maidan to prevent the possibility of misuse of the Maidan by anti-social elements.

Pooram insured

Mr. Krishnanunny said the CDB has insured the Arattupuzha Pooram festival to be held on March 23 this year. The Board will spend Rs. 20 lakhs for the Pooram which is the most important festival conducted by it. As per the legends the presiding deities of 23 temples from various parts of the district are expected to partake in the `Devamela (get-together of celestial beings)' of the festival.

More than 70 caparisoned elephants will be paraded as part of Kootti Ezhunnellippu which will be accompanied by an exciting percussion concert.

The noted Chenda exponent, Moorkkanad Madhathil Naryanan Kutty Marar, has been selected for the `Mullappally Govindankutty Marar Award' for the best percussionist. The award carries a gold medal and a plaque.

Appointments

The president said the board will not be making any permanent appointments in accordance with the court orders in this regard. Action will be taken on the complaints of the previous Board having made appointments against the legal norms, after proper investigations.

The temporary staff in the Board will be dismissed only after the court pronounces a verdict on the issue.

However, the applications of the qualified temporary staff for permanent appointment will be given due sympathetic consideration, the Board president said.

The Board member, A. C. Velayudhan, the secretary, V. Remani, the cultural officer, Thankappan, and the deputy commissioner, U. Govindankutty, were also present at the press conference.
