Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MARCH 18. Two research scholars of the Salim Ali School of Ecology and Environmental Sciences in Pondicherry University, K.R. Saravanan and K. Ilangovan, said here on Thursday that they came across seeds of rare species of mangroves in Nallavadu and Moorthykuppam near here last week. The species belonged to `Rhizophoraceae and Arecaceae' which `were not recorded so far along the coastlines in Pondicherry.' The local fishermen told the researchers that the seeds were found on the coastal belt only recently. They would sow the seeds in their nurseries and hoped that the species would enter the biodiversity index of Pondicherry mangroves.
