Life term for aged woman

SRIVILLIPUTTUR MARCH 18. An aged woman, N. Seethalakshmi, was today awarded life sentence for murdering her daughter-in-law in 1998.The prosecution said Seethalakshmi and her friend, Ramalingam, killed her daughter-in-law, Shanthi, when the victim questioned the "illegal" relationship of the mother-in-law.

Later, Seethalakshmi and her two sons, Ramanathan and Raghunathan (Shanthi's husband) disposed of the body in Dindigul district. However, the driver of a car in which the body was carried alerted the police.

Shanthi's husband Raghunathan and Ramalingam died during trial. The principal district and sessions judge, D. Duraisamy, sentenced Seethalakshi on murder charge, while Ramanathan was found guilty of attempting to conceal evidence.

Preparations for DMK meet

THANJAVUR MARCH 18. Hectic preparations are on for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's zonal conference here on April 9 and 10. A pandal is being erected at Vasthathchavadi on Nanjikottai road.

The former Minister and general secretary of the district unit, Ko.Si.Mani, held a meeting to discuss on preparations for the meeting. According to Mr. Mani, covering an area of 4,32,000 sq.ft., the venue will have protected drinking water will be supplied from borewells sunk for the purpose. Party office-bearers, MLAs, former MLAs, members of women's wing participated in the meeting. Mr. Mani said the conference assumes significance as it would precede Assembly elections.

Ramalingam, former MLA and chairman of resolution committee; Sakkottai Anbazhagan, chairman of Kumbakonam panchayat union and chairman of hospitality committee, spoke.

Students cautioned

CHENNAI MARCH 18. The Madras University has cautioned students planning to pursue B.Ed. degree course not to seek admission in institutions that do not have its affiliation.

Students or their parents should verify whether the institutions, identified by them for doing the course, had the affiliation, before joining the course. "The University of Madras will not be held responsible for getting admission in such unaffiliated institutions," says an official release.

The caution had been issued as some institutions were offering B.Ed. degree course and enrolling students without getting the affiliation.

German firm executive calls on CM

CHENNAI MARCH. 18. Heiner Schmeck, executive of Dornier Consulting GmbH, sister concern of Daimler Chrysler AG, manufacturers of Mercedes Benz cars, today called on Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and explained to her the proposals submitted by the company.

Mr. Schmeck told the Chief Minister that the company could assist the Government in increasing investment in the State in the automobile and automobile component sectors, says an official release.

Dornier Consulting GmbH was very active as investment consultants for the last four decades, handling business volume around 30 billion Euros an year in traffic, transportation and resources management.

He was accompanied by Heinz Kopp, Consul-General of Germany in Chennai and Sridhar, local representative of the company. The German delegates appreciated the business-friendly environment in the State, the release said.

The Development Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Finance), N. Narayanan, and the Industries Secretary, Rameshram Mishra, were present.

Support for curbing video piracy

CHENNAI MARCH 18. The Tamil Film Producers' Council has announced that it would extend full cooperation and support to the police to stamp out video piracy from the State.

T.G. Thyagarajan, president, said the recent haul made by the city police under the supervision of the Commissioner was commendable. "We specially thank the City Police Chief for his keen interest in eradicating this menace which was killing the Tamil film industry," he said in a statement.

Record cargo throughput

CHENNAI MARCH 18. The Chennai port posted an all-time record cargo throughput of 41.57 million tonnes up to March 15. The total cargo handled exceeded the previous highest of 41.22 million tonnes in 2000-01 and 39.17 million tonnes set for 2004-05 by the Shipping Ministry.

The previous highest included 10 million tonnes of thermal coal for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, which has since shifted to the Ennore port, says a Chennai Port Trust release.

Two killed

TIRUNELVELI MARCH 18. A Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus fatally knocked down two motorcycle riders near the new bus stand at Vaeinthankulam on Friday night.

The police said M. Akbar Bhasha (20) of Melapalayam, who was driving the two-wheeler, lost control over his bike and dashed against a TNSTC bus, as it was entering the new bus stand through the entry point on the bypass road. Both Akbar Bhasha and an unidentified pillion rider were killed on the spot. The bus driver, Murugadoss, of Nagercoil was arrested.

Man arrested

Tuticorin March 18. A 39-year-old man was today arrested on a charge of drawing money from a bank, producing a false legal heir document.

The police said Neeldurai withdrew Rs.2,38,090 from the fixed account of Manthram from a nationalized bank at Tiruchendur last year.

Assaulted

Tuticorin March 18. Ponraj was allegedly assaulted by his brother, Murugesan, at Vilathikulam on Thursday over a dispute at their farm.

The police said Ponraj was injured in the attack and admitted to the Tuticorin Governemnt Hospital.

Pipes stolen

Tuticorin March 18. The police today arrested Mani (37) on a charge of stealing iron pipes from Thachanvilai near here on Wednesday.

According to the police, the accused stole three iron pipes kept at the garden belonging to Velayudhamani.

Residents' plea

ERODE MARch 18. The residents of Muthur in Kangeyam taluk today appealed to the Collector and the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board, through a memorandum, to supply water on alternate days. The Muthur town is getting water from the Cauvery Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme and now water is supplied twice in a week, that too for only two hours per day. The residents said that the supply was inadequate and demanded that water be supplied on alternate days.

Power shutdown

Krishnagiri March 18. Power supply will be disrupted in the following areas from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 19 owing to shutdown of Hosur sub-station for maintenance work: Hosur, Thally, Kelamangalam, Berigai, Kempatti, Bagalur, Zuzuvadi, Phase II, Denkanikottai and surrounding areas.

Adhiyamankottai sub-station: Adhiyamankottai, Nagarkoodal, Nallampalli, Ilakiampatti, Collectorate, Vennampatti, Parigam, Palayampudur, Thokkampatti, Oddapatti, Laligam and surrounding areas.

Life imprisonment

Krishnagiri March 18. The First Additional District Sessions Judge, M. Nandan, awarded life imprisonment to a 50-year-old man here on Thursday on charges of murder. According to the prosecution, the accused, Periyannan of Indur, murdered his mother-in-law, Perumayi (70) on March 17, 2003 following a family dispute. The judge sentenced Periyannan to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 2,500.
