Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, MARCH 18. Mangaloreans, who are abreast with the latest technology, seems to have shown keen interest in the direct-to-home (DTH) transmission service. Electronic shops started marketing DTH kits a month ago and already, over 3,000 houses have them. Most households have access to both the paid and free channels packages. Dealers, however, say that the paid channel variant is preferred by people as it offers a bouquet of popular channels. Mangalore has a geographical disadvantage in providing uninterrupted cable service. Another problem is that the laying of cable lines has escalated the charges. The problem heightens during the monsoon when there is disruption in service. On many occasions, the cables snap as trees or their branches fall on them. The DTH sets are available at Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 8,000 for the paid channel variant and Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 4,500 for the free channel variant. The paid channel variant also comes with a monthly fee of Rs. 30 for a channel, and a consumer has to subscribe to a minimum of two channels. There are also packages of 5, 7, 10 and 15 channels. Twelve radio channels are available on the paid package. Raghuveer Bhat of "Capitanio," who has subscribed for "Dish Pick" channel, says he is happy about the package. Though the charges he pays for the channels of his choice are more than what he paid his cable operator, he says he is happy as he gets good reception and uninterrupted relay. Prominent dealers say the response to DTH is good, and enquiries are more from areas where cable operators have not reached yet.
