`Engineer 2005' gets under way at NITK

By Our Staff Correspondent

SURATKAL, MARCH 18. The technology symposium of the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK), "Engineer 2005," was inaugurated by business analyst and columnist Mahesh Murthy, here today.

Over one thousand students from all over the country are participating in the symposium.

Many events

It will provide engineering students a platform to exhibit their technical abilities, and has 35 events covering areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, aero-modelling, engineering design, structure design, chemical reactions, mining engineering, software programming and hardware chip design.

Entrepreneurship

Mr. Murthy spoke about entrepreneurship and issues centred on it.

He noted that students are taught to be employees. In his 14 years of being an employee, he had realised the distinction between a "trend follower" and a "trendsetter," he said.

The Director of the institute, S.S. Murthy, welcomed the idea of holding an all-India technical symposium at NITK.

The convener of the symposium, Amarnath S., said engineering students need a platform to think, design and innovate. "Engineer 2005" is a realisation of this inquisitiveness, he added.

"Inscription," an online programming contest, which is being held as part of the festival, has become a hit in the programming community, he said.

Teams are asked to solve problems over a five-hour span over the Internet.

Over 200 teams from all over the world participated, Mr. Amarnath said and added that a team from Bangladesh won the contest.

Some of the industry participants in the festival include Tata Steels, MICO, Wipro, Videocon, Larsen and Toubro, Microsoft, TCS, Quest Global, SLK, Novell, Tractor India Ltd., AMD, Alliance, Juno, Celstream and others.
