Port Trust achieves record cargo throughput

CHENNAI,
MARCH 18.
The Chennai port posted an all-time record cargo throughput of 41.57 million tonnes up to March 15.
The total cargo handled exceeded the previous highest of 41.22 million tonnes in 2000-01 and 39.17 million tonnes set for 2004-05 by the Shipping Ministry.
The previous highest included 10 million tonnes of thermal coal for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, which had since shifted to the Ennore port, says a Chennai Port Trust release.
