Assistance to women SHGs

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 18. The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (TNHDC) would help women Self-Help Groups, especially those belonging to the minority community hailing from poor economic conditions. The TNHDC would provide them with training, logistics, common resources centre and even marketing avenues, the Managing Director of the Corporation, C. P. Singh has said.

Speaking at a function organised by jointly the district administration, the Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation and the TNHDC on Thursday to give away training completion certificates and disburse financial assistance from banks to the SHG members Mr. Singh said that the Corporation was looking at avenues for diversification into common utility items in handicrafts by adding value.

The metal and wooden craft items were often ornamental and decorative in value and the clientele to such items were limited. But, manufacture of common utility and fast moving items such as handkerchiefs, bed-spreads, pillow covers, cups, saucers and plates would fetch more market. The focus should be on producing such items and value addition. The SHGs in Coimbatore should create a brand value for the products they make.

The District Collector, S. Kosalaraman, said this initiative would change the living conditions of women.

The Collector said 274 women were provided with training in lace embroidery, production of jute bags, scented candles, agarbathis, leather goods and palm leaf products. As many as 263 women were given financial aid to the tune of Rs. 13.15 lakhs.

The Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, A. Subramanian, gave away the financial assistance from bankers to the women SHGs who had completed their training.
