Roaster trouble: aspirants shoot off letter to YSR

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 18. The rumblings over the introduction of the roaster system in the counselling for admissions into the post-graduate medical courses continued on the Friday, the fifth day of the counselling, with students alleging that the new system was depriving meritorious aspirants of the opportunity to take up higher studies.

A group of students staged a demonstration in front of the NTR University of Health Sciences demanding that the authorities immediately conduct re-counselling so that meritorious students got their due.

In a memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the "Meritorious Students Forum" opposed the "brutal" process of counselling because of which, they said, they were being bypassed and denied seats.

"It is better to put the post-graduate seats for sale rather than follow this method of counselling," they said in the memorandum.

Urging the Chief Minister to do justice to deserving candidates, the members warned that the Government would be held responsible if untoward things happen to these students in case they were deprived of the results of their hardwork and devotion. The students exuded confidence that their decision to approach the High Court would yield results. "If we do not get justice, we will approach the Supreme Court," they said.

`Wait for HC verdict'

The NTR-UHS Vice-Chancellor, R. Sambasiva Rao, however, said that the agitation by students was not an issue as it had been happening right from the commencement of the counselling. Mr. Rao wanted the students to wait till the proceedings of High Court were finalised instead of taking up agitation at the venue of the counselling.
