dated March 21, 1955: Gopala Reddi elected leader

Mr. B. Gopala Reddi was unanimously elected leader of the Andhra United Congress Legislature Party at a meeting of the legislators held at the Andhra Ratna Bhavan at Vijayawada on March 20. One hundred and thirty-eight of the 146 members of the party were present. Immediately after this, Mr. Kala Venkata Rao contacted the Governor at Kurnool by telephone and intimated him about the unanimous election of Mr. Gopala Reddi as the leader of the party. Earlier, Mr. Kala Venkata Rao, who presided over the conduct of the election, called upon members to propose names for leadership. Mr. N. Sanjiva Reddi proposed the name of Mr. Gopala Reddi and Mr. G. Latchanna, former KLP leader, seconded and Mr. B. Ramakrishna Reddi, Secretary of the Praja Party, supported it. Since Mr. Gopala Reddi's name was the only one proposed and as there were no other contestants, Mr. Kala Venkata Rao declared Mr. Gopala Reddi unanimously elected. He also announced that the Governor had congratulated Mr. Gopala Reddi on his unanimous election and invited him (Mr. Gopala Reddi) to meet him at Kurnool. All roads in Vijayawada led to the Andhra Ratna Bhavan where large crowds collected since early morning long before the scheduled election time of 10 a.m. As the legislators came to the hall, their names and constituencies were announced to the crowds. Prolonged cheers greeted Mr. Gopala Reddi when he came to the meeting hall. Mr. T. Prakasam, who arrived at 10.40 a.m., was received by Mr. Gopala Reddi and conducted to the special chair that had been provided for him. Later talking to pressmen, Mr. Gopala Reddi said his Cabinet would consist of not more than nine members.
