Timely

Sir, — The Catholic Church's description of Dan Brown's book, The Da Vinci Code, as a collection of "shameful and unfounded lies" (March 17) is not surprising. Although the author claims that the book is a fiction, the fact remains that it hurts the religious beliefs of the Church.

We are living at a time when the distinction between fact and fiction is sought to be blurred. The Church's denunciation of the book is timely.

Joshua Kalapati,
Chennai

Sir, — The Church's strong disapproval is understandable. But while we have a right to our views, we should admit that the exploration of truth is as much the prerogative of a creative writer as it is of a theologian. Art deals not with what is, but what may be.

Jacob George,
Changanacherry, Kerala
