Plea to stop water supply to Tirupur

By Our Staff Reporter

ERODE, MARCH 20 . The Erode Makkal Mandram has urged the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, to stop the supply of Cauvery water to Tirupur.

In a memorandum, the Mandram's organiser, M. Sellappan, stated that supplying 30-crore litres of water to Tirupur everyday under the Rs. 1023-crore project would affect the Erode district.

With the Erode Municipality supplying two-crore litres of water to its residents on alternate days, 30-crore litres a day for a town whose population was much less, was unfair, he said. The Cauvery water would be used more for commercial purposes, he claimed.

The Orathupalayam Reservoir was already contaminated due to discharge of untreated effluents into the Noyyal by the dyers in Tirupur, rendering thousands of acres barren. More water for commercial purposes would only mean more contamination, he alleged. He also suggested that Cauvery water for Erode could be drawn from the reservoir through huge pipelines.

Stray cattle menace

The straying of bulls, cows and goats are on the increase in Erode. Though the municipal officials have instructed the owners of the animals not to allow them to stray on the main roads, the menace continues.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Advisory Committee members, the Revenue Divisional Officer, R. Gajalakshmi, Traffic Deputy Superintendent of Police, R. Sengodan, along with the Tahsildar, Thiyagarajan and the Traffic Inspector, Sundararajan, conducted a survey from the Railway station - bull fight junction to Kumilankuttai area on Perundurai road.

It was already decided to widen the main roads and shift the electric and telephone posts to road margins. They also noticed some encroachments on main roads and decided to evict them.
