Delimitation taken up on priority basis, says Tandon

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 20. The Election Commissioner and member of the Delimitation Commission, B.B. Tandon, said here today that delimitation of constituencies of Assemblies of four States (Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal) and the Union Territory of Pondicherry had been taken up on priority basis as these States and Pondicherry would be holding Assembly polls next year.

Mr. Tandon had earlier chaired a public hearing, listening to the views of a number of participants from different walks of life on the Commission's proposed delimitation of Assembly constituencies in Pondicherry, Mahe and Yanam regions. The Commission had held a public hearing in Karaikal on Saturday.

The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minster, A.V. Sreedharan, the Pondicherry PCC president, V. Narayanasamy, MP, the general secretary of the Congress Committee A Gandhiraj, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman (DMK), the Secretary of State unit of the AIADMK, A. Anbalagan, the president of the Pondicherry State unit of the BJP, R Kesavalu and the PMK convenor, N.G. Panneerselvam and legislators expressed their views requesting the Commission to take the sentiments of the people into consideration before effecting delimitation.

A delegation of residents of the Oulgaret constituency pleaded that the name, Oulgaret, should not be dropped when territorial limits of Assembly constituencies were redrawn. Those hailing from Mahe region including the Health Minister and the Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister asserted that the Mahe region should continue to have two constituencies without any reduction.

The Dalit leaders referred to the possible hardships the downtrodden would face if the delimitation of certain segments was carried out in a `zig zag manner.'

A number of participants pleaded that reserved segments be created in the town and in the municipal limits of Pondicherry and Oulgaret to remove the current hardships in getting special attention for the progress of the downtrodden.

The proposal of the Commission in respect of Pondicherry is that the 30 constituencies should be categorised as follows: Pondicherrry (23), Karaikal (5), Mahe (one) and Yanam (one).
