Three primary schools get prizes

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, MARCH 20. The Department of Elementary Education today distributed prizes and awards to the best three primary schools in the district and to students of various schools who performed well in the cultural events conducted during the year.

A. Sankar, Joint Director, Elementary Education Department, gave away the prizes to the headmasters of the three best schools and honoured the teachers who won the best teacher award at the national level and the Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Award.

The three schools adjudged best during 2003-`04 were Panchayat Union Primary School at Thirazhi near Tirumangalam, Panchayat Union Primary School at Thachanendhal in Madurai East Range and St. Mary's R.C. Primary School, East Gate, Madurai. The representatives of the schools were given shields and certificates in recognition of the schools' performance.

Prizes were also given to those primary and middle schools that topped in mobilising students to participate in government small savings schemes.

Addressing the teachers and students, Mr. Sankar said the students who performed well in the cultural programmes must aim to win national-level events too. He said that the department would encourage them in these endeavours.

R. Karunakaran, another Joint Director of the Elementary Education Department, emphasised the role of teachers in shaping the students into good citizens. He said lack of education only means darkness and that it was dangerous in any society.

The Joint Director said schools should not just remain as teaching centres but institutions that work for the overall progress of the nation.

The Chief Educational Officer of the district, K. Sridevi, called upon all the school headmasters to make consistent efforts to improve the performance of their students. "Schools influence the students' lives in a big way, hence teachers have a crucial role to play," she said.

C. Rajamani, Corporation Commissioner (in-charge) and J. Sudarsanam from the Jan Shikshan Samsthan, offered their felicitations.

A. Rajeswari, Corporation Education Officer (in-charge) spoke.

N. Ammayappan, District Elementary Education Officer (in-charge), outlined the steps taken to improve the primary and middle schools in the district.
