VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 20. The Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department, C. Ramakrishna Rao, has said that Krishna district is all set to get an additional 20 social welfare hostels in the next financial year. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 25 lakhs. The Social Welfare Department would release a sum of Rs. 12.5 lakhs in cash while rice component would be released in equal proportion to compensate the remaining amount. In a statement here on Sunday, Mr. Rao admitted that only 90 of the total 161 welfare hostels in the district were housed in permanent buildings and said the remaining would get their own buildings in a phased manner. He said scholarships for the eligible SC students would also be released in the next financial year. "We have released a sum of Rs. 12 crores for 13,400 students in the current fiscal year. Of this, Rs. 10 crores is spent on clearance of pending bills of the students while the remaining Rs. 2 crores was diverted towards maintenance allowance." Besides, the medical and engineering students were sanctioned a grant of Rs. 7,500 each under `Book Bank' scheme for purchase of books. The amount sanctioned under the scheme was extended to the respective educational institutions to ensure that it was availed by genuine beneficiaries. Mr. Rao said exuded confidence that the pass percentage in the SSC examinations was likely to cross 90 per cent this year. "We intend to extend a cash prize of Rs. 500 to students who secure more than 500 marks," he said.
