Police plan joint action to counter naxals

By M.V. Subramanyam

CUDDAPAH, MARCH 21. The police of Cuddapah, Anantapur and Chittoor districts are to undertake joint operations to counter the naxalite offensive.

In the wake of stepped up CPI (Maoist) violence and a spate of encounters in various parts of the State, particularly at Vempenta and Kurnool-Prakasam border, the joint operations were mooted.

The Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, told The Hindu that he was in constant touch with his counterparts in Chittoor and Anantapur districts.

The police have identified Maoist underground (UG) cadre, militants and sympathisers in the affected areas, he said.

Special police parties are intensively combing the naxalite-affected Rayachoti and Lakkireddipalle constituencies and the Mydukur constituency, which witnessed naxal movements of late in Varikuntla, native village of the Badvel MLA, D.C. Govinda Reddy, and S. Palagiri in Kasinayana mandal.

Maoists of Tadpatri area in Anantapur district have been concentrating on the Pulivendula constituency, native of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, according to sources. As CPI (Maoist) enquired about landlords and moneylenders demanding high interest and instances of land grabbing from the poor during their visits to several villages in the district, the police suspect the likelihood of naxal violence.

Some Maoists surrendered since the Congress Government came to power in the State. A district secretary, Chadipiralla Narasimha Reddy, and the Cuddapah-Chittoor joint committee member, Kesava, and his wife, Latha, surrendered before the DGP, Swaranjit Sen.

A special guerrilla squad member, Batyala Lakshmi Devi alias Swaroopa, alias Nirmala, surrendered before the Additional SP, M. Lakshmi Reddy, in Cuddapah. A Bahuda dalam member, Manuganti Nageswara Rao alias Anji, of Ayyalavandlapalle in Tsundupalle mandal, surrendered before the Cuddapah SP. The Cuddapah-Chittoor districts' joint committee secretary, Zaheer, was said to have shifted to Telangana region.

Intensive checks

The police are gearing up to tackle the naxal menace in the district and holding frequent meetings with the DSPs and other officials. Intensive surprise vehicle checks are being done all over the district to detect movement of wanted and suspicious persons and to unearth weapons and other contraband.
