`Police should have legal knowledge'

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA, MARCH 21. M.G. Sudhindra, District and Sessions Judge, has stressed the need for the police to have legal knowledge.

Inaugurating a free legal service and legal education camp for policemen organised by the District Legal Services Authority and the District Bar Association here on Sunday he said, the police play a vital role in maintaining law and order. They can discharge their duty effectively if they know law.

Implementation of the Justice V.S. Malimutt Committee report, which recommended amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, will help reduce the number of criminal cases. One of the amendments to CrPC will empower the court to punish fake witnesses, he said.

He urged the police officers to investigate the cases properly and avoid laxity in filing charge sheets.

Presiding over the function, B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, stressed the need for empowering the police to settle minor disputes. The Union and the State governments are working in this direction, he added.

Erritatha Swamy, President of the Bar Council, Chandramalle Gowda, Additional District and Sessions Judge of the fast track court, B.N. Neelagar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Andani Gowdar, public prosecutor, participated in the workshop.
