CHENNAI, MARCH 21. The Madras Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has decided to seek permission of the Madras Cemeteries Board for construction of a common vault cellar for burial of the dead in Chennai within the Kilpauk cemetery area. Yakob Mar Irenaios, Metropolitan of the Diocese, on Friday chaired a meeting with the vicars and representatives of the Orthodox Parishes. The meeting followed a news report published in these columns regarding the stoppage of burial in the cemetery. It noted that the members of the Orthodox Church, the most ancient church in India, have been living in Chennai for more than a century and burying their dead in the Kilpauk cemetery since its function. The decision by the Madras Cemeteries Board to discontinue burial was taken without any notice to the Orthodox churches of Chennai. The news item had come as a shock to the Orthodox Christian community. "Cremation is not allowed / practised according to the Orthodox Church tradition. ... It was decided to approach the Madras Cemetery Board to permit construction of a common vault (cellar) for the burial of the Orthodox Christians of Chennai within Kilpauk cemetery area." The Metropolitan in a letter to the secretary of the cemeteries board wanted early action to relieve the anxiety of the Orthodox Christians of Chennai.
