Mangalore
MANGALORE, MARCH 21. The "Go Samarakshana Samithi" at Urva here, which had been entrusted by a court with the task of taking care of cattle which were seized when they were being transported illegally, alleged that the Mangalore City Corporation, the Revenue and police officials forcibly entered the "goshala" in the early hours of Monday and took away 106 heads of cattle in six lorries without court permission. The Samithi President, Vasudeva Gowda, and its Convenor, Vinay L. Shetty, told presspersons here that over 300 officials loaded the cattle, being taken care of by the Samithi for the last nine months, onto the lorries in a inhuman way, though the Samithi members and the public protested. They alleged that the officials even abused the Samithi members and arrested them. Terming the act as a case of contempt of court, they pointed out the rule that cattle could be transported only during the day and said the Samithi would lodge a complaint before the court and the Superintendent of Police. They charged the officials with yielding to political pressure to appease the minorities. Mr. Vasudeva Gowda said the "goshala" had 131 heads of cattle, seized during illegal transportation to slaughterhouses from Sullia, Karkala, Bantwal, Suratkal and other parts of Mangalore. Of them, 15 were missing since March 15. The Samithi spent Rs. 80,000 per month on an average on the cattle. Later, the Samithi workers, who had been arrested, staged a dharna in protest against the action of the officials. UNI
