TIRUCHI, MARCH 21. In view of the closure of Mayiladuthurai - Kumbakonam section for gauge conversion work from April 1, the Southern Railway has decided to cancel the operation of four passenger trains running in that section. According to a Southern Railway press release issued here on Sunday, Train No. 811 Mayiladuthurai - Kumbakonam passenger, Train No. 812 Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai and Train No. 823 Mayiladuthurai - Kumbakonam passenger trains would be cancelled from April 1. Train No. 824 Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai passenger would be cancelled from April 2. The existing slip coach service between Tambaram - Mayiladuthurai - Karaikkudi running by Train No. 813/861 and 862/814 will continue to be operated. There will be no change in the pattern of train service running via Mayiladuthurai - Tiruvarur/Nagoor, Tiruthuraipoondi - Karaikkudi - Rameswaram, the release added.
Correction
The Salem-Vriddhachalam metre gauge section will be closed for both passenger and goods traffic from April 1, 2005 due to gauge conversion work between Vriddhachalam and Attur, and not as published (in The Hindu dated March 19).
