TIRUPUR, MARCH 21. The residents of Thannerpandhal Colony in Velampalayam Municipality, on the outskirts of Tirupur, are facing a severe shortage of drinking water due to minimal number of public taps. The municipality was supplying water once in 15 days, said Kalaivani, a hosiery worker. Earlier, the local body did supply drinking water once in eight days. Now the situation had worsened, she added. Long queues of pots and the agonising wait of women and men in front of the public taps explain the situation in the area. There are only six public taps for the 2,000-odd households. Each family could get only three pots. "We are waiting for more than two hours. The pressure of water is very low and each of us will get only three pots. It is not at all sufficient and the local body seems to be least bothered about our plight,'' said Gopalan, a resident. The recently upgraded municipality has not engaged lorries to supply water and there are no enough borewells also. Public buy water from private bullock cart operators at a cost of Rs. 1.50 per pot.
