HYDERABAD, MARCH 21. In an initiative aimed at making use of kitchen waste generated in star hotels in the city, the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) is planning to initiate them into the vermi-compost concept. The proposal being formulated by the PCB seeks to encourage star hotels to make use of the waste generated in their kitchens for preparing organic compost that can be used for their gardens. "Each of these hotels generate huge quantities of kitchen waste in the form of discarded and cut vegetables, fruits and other food items. Instead of dumping them, they can compost their waste and use the manure for their own lawns and gardens," says PCB's Joint Chief Environmental Engineer, S. Surya Prasad. The proposed facility neither demands for much space nor involves huge operation costs. In fact, Mr. Prasad says the hotels need not even have a separate space for vermi-composting work. "They can place a few containers and put all the biodegradable waste into it and introduce earthworms into it. In return, they are ensured of good vermi-compost for their green areas," he says.

At the behest of PCB, a similar effort was taken up at WelcomHotel Grand Bay in Visakhapatnam recently with good results. According to the officials, the hotel formed pits on the lawns and procured specific earthworms for vermi-composting. "After taking care of its gardening needs, the hotel is in a position to offer the compost to others," Mr. Prasad says. He says the proposal is being discussed with Regional and Zonal officials and the PCB will soon approach star hotels shortly with the concept. "We hope to explain the concept and encourage them in taking up the vermi-composting projects on their premises itself," adds Mr. Prasad.
