dated March 23, 1955: PM on role of the Press

Laying the foundation-stone of the Indian and Eastern Newspaper Society building at a colourful function in New Delhi on March 21, Prime Minister Nehru said that it was three years since this project was first placed before him by Mr. C.R. Srinivasan. He was glad that at last it had reached the foundation-stone laying stage (laughter). Hoping that the progress would be swifter now, he said it was desirable that in a place like Delhi, newspaper correspondents should have some kind of a meeting place. "It seems to me that in the modern world, we have developed a new type of nomads - newspapermen, who wander about not only all over the world but also wander about their headquarters. It is a right and good thing that they be given some place where they can occasionally sit down, meet others and develop to some extent a little more stable outlook." The Prime Minister said, "I think the Press is certainly a very important element in any set-up, democratic or other. In a democratic set-up, especially, we want a free and independent Press, and a well-informed and stable Press. How far the Press, apart from these general qualifications, is a mirror of democracy or not is another matter." Expressing great concern over the astoundingly small number of readers of newspapers and the still smaller number of readers of books, he said democracy must be based on reading which should lead to thinking and consideration of problems and understanding them in the proper perspective. The Press, Mr. Nehru said, should not only mirror the conditions as they were but encourage right trends and right directions and make people think of the big things of life.
