ERODE, MARCH 22. Five villages in the district have been selected for the implementation of the Tamil Nadu Rural Water Supply and Sanitation scheme for which the State Government has already granted Rs. 4,000 crores, the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, has said. The villages were: Kadirampatty, Engure, Mulayampoondi, Konamoolai and Vellankoil, he said. Inaugurating the World Water Day celebrations here today, he said steps have been taken to provide potable water and maintain proper sanitation in these villages besides making them model villages.
`Conserve water'
The Collector said ground water level was depleting and everyone should take steps to conserve water and use it economically. Though last year's rain had contributed to the rise in ground water level the demand for water was still high.
The Collector wanted the Tamil Nadu Water supply and Drainage Board to take immediate action and provide water to those areas, which were witnessing shortage.
People-friendly
He said since water shortage might create law and order problems, officials should act in a people-friendly manner and try to provide uninterrupted water supply to all villages.
The Collector said that the district administration would render all possible help to the officials in this regard.
Earlier the Board executive engineer, Palanisamy, said only 2.7 per cent of the available water was fit for human consumption and the remaining contained salt.
The superintending engineer, TWAD, P. S. Krishnamurthy, stressed the importance of conserving water and assured that the TWAD will take all effective steps to provide water to all.
