Sudirman Cup groupings announced

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22. India has been grouped with Scotland, Wales and the US in group 3B of the world mixed team badminton championship for the Sudirman Cup to be held in Beijing from May 10 to 15.

Only the top eight teams, in Group 1, are eligible to vie for the title while the other teams in lower groups will battle for promotions to higher groups in the next championships.

Contests involve one match each in the men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

India finished overall 16th in the last edition held in Eindhoven, Holland, in March 2003.

Groupings: Group 1A: Korea, Denmark, England, Thailand. Group 1B: China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Sweden. Group 2 A: Malaysia, The Netherlands, Chinese Taipei, Russia. Group 2 B: Singapore, Japan, Germany, Ukraine. Group 3 A: New Zealand, Finland, Bulgaria, Poland.

Group 3 B: Scotland, India, Wales, USA. Group 4 A: Norway, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, Estonia. Group 4 B: France, Australia, South Africa, Peru. Group 5 A: Italy, Cyprus, Luxembourg. Group 5 B: Israel, Lithuania, Turkey. Group 6: Sri Lanka, Armenia, Turkmenistan and Mongolia.
