By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, MARCH 22. The reported assault of a student by the head of a postgraduate department of Kuvempu University at Jnana Sahyadri on Tuesday provoked the students to go on a strike on Wednesday.

According to the sources, the Head of the Postgraduate Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, V.N. Bhat, reportedly slapped and pushed P. Thomas, a student of the fourth semester. Thomas is said to have suffered an injury in the back.

The incident happened when the student went to Prof. Bhat's chamber to discuss attendance shortage. It was stated that a heated discussion between them led to an assault on Thomas. Thomas was admitted to Mcgann Hospital.

Students of the department told presspersons at the hospital that Thomas who had attendance shortage went to the chamber of Prof. Bhat to explain the reasons for it. Thomas also pointed out the lack of facilities in the department, which enraged Prof. Bhat.

A complaint has been lodged with police.
