Divergent trends in sex ratios in Pondicherry

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 22. The 2001 census of the Union Territory shows divergent trends in the sex ratio among the elderly and child population. When there is more number of women than men in certain regions of the Union Territory, in the case of the child population, the number goes against the girl child.

According to 2001 census, the sex ratio (number of women per 1,000 men) was 1001, up from 979 during 1991 census. It shows there is more number of women than men.

Among the regions, Mahe ranks top in sex ratio with 1147 women per 1000 men. However, the region ranks least in sex ratio among Scheduled Castes with 754 women per 1000 men. Yanam, another enclave of the Union Territory registered the lowest sex ratio of 975 women per 1000 men. But it has improved its position from the 1991 census -- 696 women per 1000 men.

The sex ratio among the SC population in Pondicherry and Karaikal has improved from the 1991 census. The ratio, which was 984 for both the places in 1991, has gone up to 1019 in Pondicherry and 1025 in Karaikal during the 2001 census. The ratio has improved in Yanam from 980 in 1991 to 993 in 2001 census.

In the 1991 census the child sex ratio was 963, but it improved by 3 percentage points in the 2001 census. In the child sex ratio too, Mahe tops with 974, while Yanam recorded the lowest with 951.

Statistics of child sex ratio among the SC population shows that it has increased from 964 during 1991 census to 990 in 2001 census. Mahe region registered the highest sex ratio of 1200 and Yanam records the lowest with 958.

The literacy rate went up to 81.24 per cent in the 2001 census from 74.74 in the 1991 census. In the last census, Mahe reported the highest literacy with 95.66 per cent and Yanam the lowest of 73.72 per cent. The figure for Yanam shows that the literacy rate has come down from the 76.86 recorded in the 1991 census

The literacy rate of the SC population has increased to 69.12 per cent in the 2001 census. The figure was 56.26 per cent in the 1991 census.
