Montek promises better facilities at Hampi

HAMPI, MARCH 22. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, is hopeful that the thrust given to infrastructure development "will boost tourism in Hampi."

Mr. Ahluwalia told presspersons here today that the emphasis was on improved connectivity to major tourist centres. The Planning Commission was interested in supporting the work being done by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in restoring the monuments in Hampi and in management of the site.

"The Planning Commission does not sanction individual projects. But we have been supporting the ASI by way of higher allocation for the restoration of monuments and other things," he said.

To a question, Mr. Ahluwalia said the State's resource mobilisation was better than other States. Many States received significant assistance under the 12th Finance Commission. Mahendra Jain, Commissioner for Tourism; S.N.Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner; Pankaj Kumar Thakur, Superintendent of Police; J. Ranganath, Senior Conservation Archaeologist with the ASI; B.P. Adnur, Assistant Commissioner; Venkata Chalapati, Tahsildar; and Cheluvadi, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Hospet, accompanied Mr. Ahluwalia.
