Quality standards for wet grinders on anvil

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 22. The Coimbatore Wet Grinders and Accessories Manufacturers' Association (COWMA) and the Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), Coimbatore, will soon draft quality parameters for wet grinders produced by the association members. It will help standardisation and common branding of the products.

The association President, N. Rajan, and the SISI Deputy Director, S. Panikkasserry, said here on Tuesday that as a first step towards this, SISI and the PSG College of Technology would conduct a study on the time taken for grinding, energy consumed, characteristics of motors and safety aspects in wet grinders.

This would be suggested to the members and then certification introduced for those who adopted the prescribed standards. Briefing presspersons here on the progress of the cluster programme for the Coimbatore wet grinder units, they said that during the last ten months three consortia were formed for marketing, motor and arm set manufacturing.

A group of 10 "arm set" manufacturers had availed themselves of Rs. 5 lakhs as assistance under the Mutual Credit Guarantee Fund (MCGF) scheme for the purchase of raw materials and now, another group of ten units has sought Rs. 10 lakhs as assistance under the scheme. They purchased raw materials from the local traders. They had decided to go in for bulk purchase to bring down the production cost.

Hence, they had availed themselves of assistance under the scheme. The marketing consortium recently organised a food festival in Indore and sold nearly 40 wet grinders at the three-day event.

"We will focus more on marketing next year," Mr. Rajan said.
