Large ammunition haul from train

By Our Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI, MARCH 22. The Government Railway Police (GRP) this morning recovered 5,012 rounds of live ammunition from a coach of the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express at the Guwahati Railway station. The ammunition, mostly of .303 rifles, was concealed in five unclaimed suitcases in coach No. 8. The train originated at Dibrugarh and was to leave Guwahati at 6.a.m.

The recovery was made during a routine check of passenger baggage by the GRP personnel. The GRP team however, had difficulty in investigation into the recovery of the ammunition, as no passenger list was available due to the ongoing telecom strike. Only three counters were functioning at the computerised reservation centre. The rest were affected by a link failure.

"Following recovery of the ammunition we had questioned the passengers of the coach but there was none to claim the suitcases," said a GRP official. He suspected that the owners of the suitcases, presumably members of an illegal gun running racket, had fled when they saw the GRP men checking the baggage.
