THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 22. Giving a new twist to the Congress group fight in the State, the Karunakaran-loyalist and the Minister for the Welfare of Backward and Scheduled Communities, A. P. Anil Kumar, woke up the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, from his bed in the early hours of today and submitted his letter of resignation. When the issue came up in the Assembly this morning, Mr. Chandy said he had rejected the resignation. However, Mr. Anil Kumar later told reporters that he would stick to his decision. Around 10 a.m., Mr. Anil Kumar called a press conference on the Assembly complex to announce his resignation. He had not attended Monday night's Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting, which elected Kadavoor Sivadasan as the party's deputy leader in the Assembly in place of M. P. Gangadharan, who was removed from the post the other day for attending the Karunakaran group's rallies against the wishes of the Chief Minister and the party's State leadership.
Kept out of CLP meet
"Party MLAs who attended yesterday's CLP meeting criticised my decision not to attend it. My action has hurt the Chief Minister's feelings. I felt I should not continue as a member of the Cabinet after damaging the Chief Minister's confidence in me," Mr. Anil Kumar said. He said he had kept out of the meeting since he did not want to become a party to the decision to elect a new deputy leader of the CLP in place of Mr. Gangadharan, a senior leader of the party from his home district of Malappuram. He had also not attended the earlier CLP meeting that removed Mr. Gangadharan from the post.
Ordinary Congressman
"My resignation has nothing to do with party group politics. I did not do it either to strengthen one group or to weaken the other... I have group affiliations. But, I have never been part of extreme postures of any group. I am an ordinary Congressman who ardently wishes for unity and discipline in the party," he said. He said that during the last six months he had functioned as a Minister in the Chandy Cabinet, he had received the full support from the Chief Minister. "My guess is that he was pleased with my performance. The only time I had caused him any inconvenience was at 1.30 a.m. today, when I woke him up to submit my resignation," Mr. Anil Kumar said.
