LUCKNOW, MARCH 22. A piquant situation arose in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly today when the ruling Samajwadi Party-led coalition voted against non-implementation of VAT in the State. The SP members voted against a private member resolution of BJP's Laxmi Kant Vajpayee opposing implementation of VAT from April 1. However, realising they had voted against non-implementation of VAT -- and in a way supported the implementation of Tax -- state parliamentary affairs minister Md. Azam Khan said it was done by `default' as the state government had not accepted it in principle. He also alleged the previous BJP-led government at the Centre was behind the implementation of VAT. "... And now they are opposing it to save their skin.''
