NAGAPATTINAM, MARCH 22. Fishermen belonging to 14 families from Thideer Kuppam, a small isolated hamlet near Kameswaram coast in Nagapattinam district, have started venturing into the sea, since yesterday, after the tsunami following the efforts of People's Development Association (PDA), a Madurai-based NGO, which came to the rescue of the fishermen families with a community kitchen. Joe Velu, Director of PDA, told The Hindu that the PDA took special efforts and convinced the fishermen to resume their fishing activity. The fishermen immediately assembled seven catamarans with the pieces of wood that remained with them out of the 14 catamarans lost in the tsunami. He pointed out that after the PDA assured that it would give them an interest free loan for the nets and the whole community accepted the responsibility of repaying the loan. Immediately, PDA bought nets worth Rs.63,000 for the seven catamarans and the fishermen resumed their fishing activity. The fish catch would be equally shared by all the families in the village. Mr.Joe Velu said that Miss Emma Birt and Mr Simon, volunteers from England and the family members of the fishermen ventured into the sea for about four hours and came with good fish catch yesterday.
