CHENNAI, MARCH 22. Hockey activity at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on the re-laid synthetic pitch begins on Thursday with the All India State Bank inter-circle tournament. Actually, the venue was thrown open for practice sessions from the first week of this month. The Bank tourney will be the first event. With the final inspection from the Central Government over a few days ago, the facility is now open for competitions, the highlight of which will be the Champions Trophy international tournament in December. The officials from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) are expected to visit the stadium shortly. The official inauguration of the facility is likely in the last week of May once work relating to the installation of floodlights is completed. The project is now in full swing, and the officials hope that everything will be in place by May 30. It is unclear at the moment whether the IHF along with the Tamil Nadu Hockey Association will go ahead with the proposed Chief Minister's Gold Cup with teams from Pakistan, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia and India. Meanwhile, the IHF has sanctioned the dates for the annual Madras Cricket Club-Murugappa Gold Cup tournament, which is expected to be held in the second fortnight of April. The details are being worked out to conduct the popular tournament.
