Air Force to conduct inquiry into sexual harassment charges
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
MARCH 22.
Following the outcry from women's groups, the Indian Air Force today announced an "independent" inquiry into charges of alleged sexual harassment of three women cadets against an instructor at its training academy near Hyderabad.
"The preliminary probe was conducted by the academy and now we want the lady cadets to appear before an independent set of officers from outside the academy," the Chief of the Air Staff, S.P. Tyagi said, after flagging off an IAF expedition to Mount Everest at the Hindon air force base near here.
However, IAF sources said that the cadets were making the charges after realising that they had failed academically. "One of them was even found to have copied at one of the exams. But we are still committed to holding an independent probe," the source said.
