Court issues summons to Joshi
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI,
MARCH 22.
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Murli Manohar Joshi, has been directed to appear before a sessions court here on June 6 in connection with a defamation complaint filed by the Tamil Nadu Government.
The III Additional Sessions Judge, Ramalingam, issued the summons today, on a complaint preferred by the City Public Prosecutor, T.V. Ganesh, on behalf of the Government protesting the former Union Minister's reported remarks against the police and the Government for arresting the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, in connection with Sankararaman murder case.
The petition said Mr. Joshi, who met the Acharya at the Vellore Central Prison in the second week of November 2004, told presspersons that there was an "ulterior motive" to the arrest of the Acharya and that it was the result of a "conspiracy." According to Mr. Ganesh, the complaint was based on media reports that Mr. Joshi had described the police action against the Sankaracharya as "atrocious, suspicious, absurd, ridiculous and obnoxious."
