KURNOOL, MARCH 22. The Agriculture Department is making serious efforts to introduce soybean in Kurnool district in the kharif season as part of its crop shift plan. The area under sunflower has crossed two lakh hectares in the district and the yield is also gradually declining because of the mono-cropping effect. The Principal Scientist of DAATT centre, G. Narasimha Rao, said the yield of sunflower in the last two kharif seasons was around two quintals per acre because of moisture stress and pests on account of mono-cropping. The soils also showed signs of nutrient depletion as sunflower absorbs more nutrients from the soil.
Promising crop
The suitable alternative crop to sunflower is soybean, which improves soil texture besides providing a stable income to farmers. Because of its multi-utility, the prices of soybean are more or less stable. Also, soybean would be attractive to farmers because of its short duration. The crop was not adopted in the district because of problems on the marketing front. The commodity can be sold only at Adilabad in the State.
