NALGONDA, MARCH 22. A former naxalite , Pappula Mallesh (26), was shot dead by unidentified persons at Sarvail of Samsthan Narayanapur mandal in Nalgonda district last night. According to the Officer on Special Duty, Ravinder, two persons picked up Mallesh from his fields last evening. Later, he was found dead on the outskirts of Sarvail with two bullet wounds on his chest. The police were not sure whether it was the handiwork of the Maoists. "Mallesh's name figured in a poster released by the Rachakonda Tigers -- who work against naxals -- recently. We cannot say who killed him," Mr. Ravinder said. Mallesh was a militant for one year from 1997 and surrendered before the police next year. The district administration sanctioned him an auto-rickshaw. He is survived by wife and three children. A report from Karimnagar said naxalites of the Janashakti group shot dead a former militant, Ganti Devaiah, at Konaraopeta mandal headquarters on Tuesday branding him a police informer. About 10 armed members took Devaiah to the village centre on the pretext of "talking to him." After grilling him for some time, they shot him dead from close range. Devaiah had surrendered with 46 Janashakti naxalites two years ago. He worked as the Jagtial dalam commander.
